A Beginner’s Guide to Enochian
This guide will provide a brief explanation of the background, speech, and usage of Enochian. It’s a bit biased towards fans of the tv series Supernatural (because trenchcoat-wearing angels are sexy), but is probably helpful to anyone who wants to start to learn Enochian.
What is Enochian? Enochian, also known as “Angelical” or “Adamical” is divine/angelic language recorded by John Dee and Edward Kelley in the 16th century. It has its own grammar, syntax, and dictionary. It’s often used or referred to in the sci-fi/fantasy TV series Supernatural. For the usage of Enochian in Supernatural, see this link: http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Enochian.
Where did Enochian come from? Basically, this philospher-type dude named John Dee (1527-1608) was a consultant to Queen Elizabeth. He got bored of trying to acquire knowledge with science, but then, in 1582, he met this rad alchemist bloke named Edward Kelley. Kelley impressed Dee with his alleged abilities as a spirit medium, being able to summon angels and spirits via crystal ball. They claimed to receive knowledge of a “celestial speech” (starting in 1583) directly from angels during their scrying sessions. Kelley recorded the first corpus of texts, called “Liber Loageth” and consisting of 49 great letter tables. The next set, received a year later, was of 48 poetic verses, referred to as “Claves Angelicae” (“Angelic Keys”). These actually came with English translations, providing the basis for Enochian vocabulary. For more about how the tablets work, see this website.
Biblical history of Enochian: According to Dee’s journals, Enochian (referred to as “Angelical” in the journals) was the language God used to create the world. Adam, the first man, used Enochian to speak with God and the angels. However, after Adam fell from God’s favor and left Paradise, Adam lost the language. From his vague memory of Enochian, he created a proto-Hebrew language, which was used as the universal human language until the Confusion of Tongues at the Tower of Babel. After this, all different human languages were developed. Enochian was hidden from humans from the time of Adam to Dee and Kelley with the exception of Enoch (hence the name “Enochian”), who recorded the Book of Loagaeth (Speech From God) for humanity. However, the book was lost in the Deluge of Noah.

How Enochian works: The Enochian alphabet is different from the English one. There are 21 letters which match up to the pronunciation of the 26 of the English alphabet, some matching up to more than one English letters. It’s read right to left, top to bottom. A lot of people forget that it’s read this way, so it often appears incorrectly when used by the Supernatural fandom.

There are several Enochian dictionaries out there (like this one), but there isn’t a hell of a lot of material out there, so they’re very incomplete. Often, modern-day Enochian users will simply use Enochian letters in place of English ones rather than using Enochian vocabulary and grammar.

Gotta keep them angels under control.
